Currentt raises €1.7 million for rollout of innovative and cyber-secure energy management system

The Currentt Navigator is produced in the Netherlands in response to grid congestion, the end of net metering and cyber threats

Currentt has raised €1.7 million, an exceptionally high amount in a pre-seed investment round. The capital injection marks a breakthrough for the nationwide rollout of the Currentt Navigator: a local, cyber-secure and sustainability-focused energy management system. This solution earned Currentt the Best Innovation Award 2025.

The investment comes at a time when grid congestion, the end of netmetering and cyber threats are putting pressure on the energy market — and fits seamlessly with the growing demand for smart, local solutions.

The Currentt Navigator is a 100% Dutch-developed energy managementsystem that enables businesses and households to manage their energy locally, securely and efficiently in order to save costs.

Scaling up and nationwide rollout

Over the past three years, the team at Currentt has been working on the development and production of the Currentt Navigator in the Netherlands. Thanks to the pre-seed investment (growth capital from investors for the step after the start-up phase), Currentt can scale up and roll out the Currentt Navigator nationwide.

The investment comes from a group of experienced investors and entrepreneurs. Together, they bring knowledge and expertise to all crucial parts of the sustainable value chain – from product development and production to marketing, sales and scaling expertise. Among them are specialists in cybersecurity, strategy, B2B hardware & software, energy, SaaS and e-commerce.

Urgent need

There is a strong sense of urgency for a solution like this, as the Dutch electricity grid is straining under the pressure. More than 12,000 companies are on a waiting list for a power connection. In addition, gridcongestion is preventing entrepreneurs from expanding or implementing their sustainability plans. Boston Consulting Group has calculated that the Netherlands is losing 10 to 35 billion euros in economic benefits every year as a result of this problem.

Consumers are also affected. The connection problem is causing delays in housing projects and energy companies are charging feed-in tariffs for unused electricity that is fed back into the grid.

In addition, the Dutch net metering scheme (called ‘salderingsregeling’) will expire on 1 January 2027. Households use an average of only 30 per cent of their solar power. The remaining 70 per cent is fed back into the grid. This is currently offset against their energy bill (netmetering). Once this is no longer possible, the surplus will yield virtually nothing, with negative financial consequences for millions of households.

In addition to direct costs for households and businesses, social costs stemming from net congestion are also rising rapidly. The investments required to make the grid strong enough to be future-proof are estimated at 200 billion euros, which translates to more than 20,000 euros per Dutch household.

An innovative and practical solution

Currentt offers an innovative and practical solution to precisely this problem. The Currentt Navigator is a compact, local energy managementsystem that is easily installed in the meter cupboard /utility cabinet. The system automatically coordinates the generation, use and (where possible) storage of energy by controlling various devices, such as solar panels, charging stations, batteries and heat pumps.

This means that locally generated, sustainable electricity is used as much as possible, rather than being fed back into the grid. The system takes into account different energy prices, for example in the case of a dynamic contract.

By balancing local supply and demand in this way, businesses and households become less dependent on the grid and the electricity grid is relieved.

Other advantages of the Currentt Navigator include greater local control, which means much lower costs for households and businesses. The system is brand-independent, making it widely applicable. All energy management is done locally, without the cloud, which guarantees maximum cybersecurity and stability. Finally, better energy management helps to achieve the transition to a sustainable energy system.

CEO Currentt: “We are bringing back simplicity”

CEO Koen Mulders of Currentt says: “Our energy system has become very complex — with, on the one hand, a growing share of renewable energy sources and therefore variable and unpredictable generation, and on the otherhand, changing regulations and the use of increasingly energy-intensive appliances. The solution lies locally. That is where we can intelligently balance supply and demand.”

Mulders continues: “With the Currentt Navigator, we are bringing simplicity to the energy transition — via a single, intuitive system where everything works together seamlessly. As a user, you always have the lowest bill and maximum use of your own sustainable electricity.”

About the pre-seed investment round, he says: “This investment enables us to make an impact at scale — towards a more sustainable society.”

Max ter Horst, Managing Partner of Rockstart Energy Fund, adds: “Our electricity system is under increasing pressure from the growing share of renewable energy sources, which are not continuously available. Real-time energy management systems are therefore indispensable, but they are vulnerable to cyber attacks.”

He continues: “Currentt offers advanced energy management systems that are inherently more secure and provide the protection that businesses and society need. The start-up is rapidly gaining ground in the market and is preparing for series production. We are proud to have an experienced and ambitious team with a lot of execution power on board!”

About Currentt

Currentt is a Dutch start-up with a single mission: to make sustainable energy simple, safe and affordable, thereby facilitating the energytransition. Winner of the Best Innovation Award 2025 at the Solar Solutions Trade Fair, Currentt offers the easiest-to-install, most universal and most cyber-secure local EMS on the market.

In 2025, the national roll-out will start via a growing network of installers: Friends of Currentt.

The team behind Currentt consists of experienced entrepreneurs, each with more than twenty years of experience at Philips (Koen Mulders, global business leader), Tripetto (Mark van den Brink, co-founder and CTO) and Zivver (Rick Goud, co-founder and CIO).

The Currentt Navigator is developed and manufactured entirely in the Netherlands. Currentt has thus made a conscious choice for Dutch quality, reliability and strategic independence. The investment round was made possible in part by Rockstart Energy, Rabobank (innovation loan), DJN Ventures and a number of business angels, all of whom focus on sustainable innovations.
